A recipe for The Biggest Event of the Summer: Take a Phenomenal One. Add one Face of America (preferably a New one). Add the United States Championship, and sprinkle a generous dash of Shane-O-Mac on top, and you get one of the most combustible United States Title Matches in recent memory.

After trading shocking wins and losses over the “workhorse” championship for months, AJ Styles and Kevin Owens take their white-hot rivalry to SummerSlam, as The Phenomenal One will defend his U.S. Title against KO with none other than SmackDown LIVE Commissioner Shane McMahon as the special guest referee.

That stipulation was made after two controversial incidents involving an official — the first at WWE Battleground when KO won the title from AJ in part because the referee was knocked loopy, and the second on SmackDown LIVE when Styles successfully retained the title against Owens because the ref missed The New Face of America’s shoulder rising off the mat.

A furious Owens demanded a rematch at SummerSlam, but he might have pressed his luck when he called for a ref that wouldn’t miss anything, as The Prodigal Son quickly volunteered himself for the task.

Given that Owens is going against a Superstar whom he’s openly antagonized for months, with an official whom he’s, well, also openly antagonized for months, he would certainly seem to have his work cut out for him. But Styles shouldn’t consider this one a gimme just yet. If there is anyone — anyone — who can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, it’s Kevin Owens, and Shane is nothing if not a man of his word: He’ll call the match down the middle whether it means handing his old WrestleMania foe a victory or a loss. In other words, after weeks of shenanigans, this one might come down to which Superstar is simply the better workhorse.

Who will walk out of Brooklyn as the United States Champion? Tune in to SummerSlam, streaming live Sunday, Aug. 20, at 8 ET/5 PT on the award-winning WWE Network.

Footage is shown of AJ Styles winning a Battle Royal to earn a shot at Kevin Owens’ WWE United States Championship. This past Friday at a house show taking place at Madison Square Garden, AJ Styles defeated Kevin Owens to win the United States Championship.

The Smackdown video plays, and we go live into the arena.

WWE US Champion AJ Styles appears before the crowd

The new WWE United States Champion, AJ Styles, makes his way to the ring to a nice reception. The crowd chants his name while he stands in the middle of the ring and soaks it in. Styles says Battleground came a little early for him at Madison Square Garden. He would never think to call himself “The Face of America,” but since Kevin Owens’ face looks like a monkey butt, this is an upgrade. This isn’t about him or Kevin Owens; it’s about the United States Championship and what it will represent. It wasn’t too long ago that a US Champion wanted to prove he was the best every time he stepped foot in a WWE ring. He took on all comers and called it a US Open Challenge. It’s time to bring it back. This championship has been overlooked too many times. Every time you see a man with this championship around his waist, you will know he’s the best. If any WWE Superstar disagrees, tonight is their lucky night. Tonight, they can come out and prove him wrong. This is the start of the AJ Styles US Open Challenge, and it starts right now. Styles waits for a potential opponent to answer the challenge. A “USA” chant fires up.

John Cena’s music hits, and he comes out to a huge reception. Cena charges down to the ring, and the crowd is really buzzing. Cena just wants to make sure Styles realizes what he just said. Styles said this is a US Championship Open Challenge. That’s for everyone else but him, right? Styles says it includes Cena… especially him. Cena says that makes it really simple. He accepts. Let’s do this right here, right now! Charles Robinson, the best referee ever, runs down to officiate the contest.

Owens says no one missed Cena and we don’t need him here. Owens says this is his title and Cena doesn’t deserve to be near it. Owens tells Cena to do himself a favor and leave because no one wants to see him. Cena says it’s not that Owens doesn’t want to see him, it’s that he can’t see him. Cena calls Owens The Michelin Man and tells him to come do something about it. Cena promises to run through Owens and then through AJ. Rusev hits the ring and attacks Cena from behind.

Back from the break and Tom reveals that SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon has made Cena and Styles vs. Rusev and Owens for tonight’s main event.

AJ Styles is backstage when John Cena walks up to him. Cena tells him to think twice about the US Open Challenge because he will eventually accept. Styles says he knew Cena wouldn’t be able to resist. Cena took something from him last time they faced, and he hasn’t forgotten about that. The US Championship makes him the best. Cena says it’s obvious he wants to compete with the best, and he respects that. Cena says he gives him his word. They’ll handle their business with the title later. For tonight, Cena has his back.
