We go right the ring and out comes WWE United States Champion AJ Styles as Greg Hamilton does the introduction.

AJ hits the ring and fans chant his name. AJ welcomes us to SmackDown, the house that he built. AJ says he is still your US Champion after defeating Kevin Owens at SummerSlam. AJ told the world that he is the workhorse of WWE and nothing is going to change because he is reinstating the US Title Open Challenge, and it starts right now. The music hits and out comes Kevin Owens.

AJ says no, this isn’t happening. He beat Owens at SummerSlam and they are done. Owens says AJ did not beat him. What happened is history repeated itself 20 years later as a McMahon screwed a Canadian out of a title once again. Owens says AJ can’t take credit for beating him because Shane McMahon screwed him. The music interrupts and out comes the SmackDown Commissioner. Shane gives a shout-out to Brooklyn. He can see Owens is visibly upset but he did exactly what he said he would do – call the match right down the middle, and in the end, AJ won fair and square. Owens rants about what happened in the match, saying Shane physically assaulted him and that’s what led to AJ winning. Owens shows us footage from the match where Owens had a close 2 count but AJ got his foot on the bottom rope. Owens says Shane is focusing on the wrong body part, he should be focusing on his own hand hitting the mat three times.

Owens goes on complaining but Shane says the referee’s decision stands. Shane says the better man won. Owens says the title is his, he wants his damn title. AJ tells them both to shut up and the crowd cheers. Owens asks if AJ dislikes the truth. AJ says he doesn’t like a whiny bitch like Owens. AJ says if Owens wants a match, he can have it tonight. Shane says it goes against his better judgement but if AJ wants to defend the title, Owens has the match tonight. Owens says that’s not enough. He’s been screwed by referees twice in the past few weeks. Owens wants to pick the referee for tonight. Shane disagrees but AJ says let him, he will still lose. Shane says no more excuses after tonight for Owens. Shane’s music hits as Owens and AJ argue.

AJ is backstage walking when Corbin appears. He says he made a deal with Owens unless… AJ sees where he’s going with this. AJ says when he retains tonight, there will be an open challenge every week and that’s how Corbin can get his shot. Corbin says he will see AJ out there. He walks off.

WWE United States Title Match: Kevin Owens vs. AJ Styles

We go to the ring and out comes special referee Baron Corbin for tonight’s main event. Back to commercial.

We see AJ Styles backstage walking. Back to commercial.

Back from the break and out comes WWE United States Champion AJ Styles. We see footage from last week’s segment with Kevin Owens and SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon, who went down after an accidental pele kick.

Fans chant AJ’s name. He says after seeing that footage, he has to get Shane out here first. The music hits and out comes the special referee for Sunday’s match between Owens and Styles. Shane thanks Providence for the love and goes on to tell AJ that no apology is necessary for last week. Fans chant Shane’s name now. AJ just wanted Shane to know that the kick was an accident. AJ wants to make sure, man to man, that Shane’s not going to use this as an excuse to screw him over on Sunday. Shane talks about being referee at SummerSlam and makes it clear – last week was an accident but if AJ puts his hands on him again, Shane will put his hands all over AJ. AJ keeps asking if that was a threat because it sounded like a threat. The tension continues until the music interrupts and out comes Owens.

Owens isn’t so sure that last week was an accident. He makes his way into the ring and says if anything happens during the match from his end, it’s an accident. Owens extends his hand for a shake and comments on getting his title back this Sunday. Shane says it wouldn’t be appropriate if he shook Owens’ hand but if Owens wants to shake, he should shake the hand of his opponent. Owens offers his hand to AJ.

This turns into trash talking and finger pointing. Owens shoves AJ. They go at it. Owens ducks and AJ almost punches Shane but Shane catches him and holds him. Owens tries to take advantage with a superkick from behind but AJ moves and Owens drops Shane instead. Owens can’t believe it. AJ smirks. A “you suck” chant starts up as Owens storms to the back. We go to a replay. Shane is down on the mat but getting to his feet. AJ is saying something to Shane, preparing to make his exit. We get another replay of what just happened to Shane. AJ heads to the back as Shane looks on while his music plays. Shane leaves the ring as well.

He wonders how Shane can be so fair to someone who did this to him just a few months ago… we see AJ destroying Shane backstage going into their WrestleMania 33 match.

AJ admits he wasn’t happy when Bryan made Shane the special referee at first. AJ says but the officiating hasn’t been great lately so Shane will need good luck with that. AJ says Owens is coming out here trying to be some master manipulator but he should just save his breath because it’s not working. Shane says AJ is confusing him with other family members, he doesn’t operate like that. Owens shows us footage of Shane screwing Steve Austin in the Survivor Series 1998 match against Mankind. Shane admits he’s had issues with AJ and Owens but that doesn’t matter now because he will be an impartial referee and he will call it down the middle. Shane says he won’t get involved unless he has to. He tells them not to give him a reason to get involved.

AJ brings up last week’s match, then proposes that they get rid of Shane, not wait until SummerSlam and do this right now with the title on the line. Fans pop. Owens says that sounds great but he’d rather win the United States Title in the United States, in a city that actually matters. AJ says what matters is that this is as close as Owens will get to the title. AJ taunts Owens with the title. They have a shoving match and Owens punches AJ with a cheap shot as Shane is in the way.
