It would appear that Y2AJ rocks. One week into their run as a tag team, and reformed rivals Chris Jericho & AJ Styles have already maneuvered themselves into contention for The New Day’s WWE Tag Team Titles by defeating the champions for the second bout in a row. Even without Mark Henry to round out the numbers to an even three-on-three, Styles & Jericho did just fine against Big E & Kofi Kingston. Styles’ flying forearmed the interfering Big E into the mezzanine, and Jericho sealed it with a Walls of Jericho to Kingston before the victors demanded a proper opportunity at the titles next week on Raw. Even though the match has yet to be made official, The New Day’s feelings on another rumble with Y2AJ seem to be like the song says: They don’t want none.

WWE superstar AJ Styles has been in the wrestling business a long time, but did you know that even before stepping into the ring he’s been obsessed with Christian hip-hop?

Styles took some time on an off day to chat with Rapzilla about wrestling, his faith, and, of course, his affinity for God inspired rhymes.

AJ has been a Christian since he was a Sophomore in High School, and he recalls the exact night it happened.

He and some friends had gone to see a play called a Judgment House. In the play, you follow two characters, a boy, and a girl. They get into a car wreck and one goes to Heaven and one goes to Hell.

“I knew I didn’t want to go to Hell,” Styles said but revealed it didn’t scare him to Christianity because he always sort of knew about God.

Growing up, his babysitter was the preacher’s wife, and his parents took him to church. However, that night, when it came down to make a decision about the afterlife – “I was ready.”

“I remember them saying if anybody wants to give their lives to Jesus please raise your hands,” the wrestler shared. “We all had our eyes closed and I was amongst friends. And I thought everybody would raise their hands, and they didn’t. I was the only one. That night I accepted Jesus, and my life started changing.”

AJ revealed that the breakup with his girlfriend went terrible, and other things started getting weird for him too. He wound up asking another girl out and she told him to come to church with her. There, he met the youth pastor and was taught to be a “Christian man” and the rest is history.

Now as a WWE superstar with a platform and celebrity status, he tries his best to outwardly live his faith. Styles said being in wrestling is no different than living your life as a Christian among other people at a normal job. There will always be things around you to distract you from your focus but you have to remain steadfast.

“There are some things that are maybe a little bit harder because there are attractive women around but you can’t forget who you are and what you have,” he said. “I love my wife, I love my kids and at the end of the day is it really worth it to live with that guilt?”

The wrestling business seems to have been good to his beliefs as well because he does not recall ever being put into a storyline that compromised his Christianity or made him feel uncomfortable. He said they know who he is and they are respectful of that.

As a Christian, Styles loves listening to Hip-Hop artists who are believers. He boasts that he can “school almost any rapper on the history of Christian hip-hop” (Will anyone take the challenge?)

His love affair with the music began in the mid-90s when his wife, then girlfriend, bought him a DJ Dove tape in 1997. He went to a Christian bookstore called Celebration and bought the whole rap section of artists on the Grapetree record label. Some of his favorites were Lil’ Raskull, FTF, and L.G. Wise.

However, the West Coast-based K2S turned out to be one of his favorite rap groups. He would buy CD’s even if he didn’t like it that much because “Where else was I going to get Christian rap music?” His wife would be upset because he would keep buying the records even when money was tight.

“Christian rap is huge now. I remember listening to GRITS and then I met them at Universal Studios and they were able to do my music,” said the performer. “I became good friends with these guys, we still keep in touch this very day.”

In fact, Styles heard their recently released new track, “Skin Deep.” He said it was “so different” and speaks to why he enjoys them so much.

He also cites T-Bone as another guy he makes people listen to because “he just tears it up.”

“The 116 crew, holy cow, all of those guys. Trip Lee, Lecrae, Tedashii…those guys are tearing it up, It’s amazing to hear those guys,” Styles said excitedly. “Those guys remind me of Grapetree which was 15 to 20 years ago.”

Unfortunately, AJ can’t have a song made by this generation of Christian rappers because it isn’t about him saying yes anymore since signing to the WWE. “I would love it, but when you have an entrance song that is in the top 200 on iTunes, you can’t really say too much about that.”

He continued, “I love those guys and would love for them to do something for me. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy this music. I make the kids listen to it whether they like it or not.”

Now, of course, the most important of questions was asked, “If you had a chance to train one of your favorite Christian rappers in the ring, who would you pick?”

“I would have K2S as my tag team partners…Tedashii is Samoan, right? He’s gotta be an athlete? Lecrae is tall, so you never know…”

Stay tuned for part two with AJ Styles next Monday, where we discuss his transition to the WWE, debuting in the Royal Rumble, and some of his favorite wrestling moments.

Following his loss to AJ Styles in their rematch at Fastlane, “Y2J” Chris Jericho would make an appearance on RAW. Jericho says that, for years, he heard of this guy by the name of AJ Styles who was tearing up the independent scene and, when Styles arrived in WWE, he instantly disliked “The Phenomenal One”. Jericho continues, saying that he had three matches with AJ Styles and he would call their match at Fastlane “phenomenal”. Jericho then says he’s had some time to think about his loss to AJ Styles and he’s got some things to say, but he wants to say them to AJ’s face, calling Styles out. AJ Styles then makes his way to the ring to confront Chris Jericho as Jericho says “congratulations” to AJ Styles, saying that Styles proved that he “belongs” in WWE. Jericho then says that AJ Styles proved to be what he says he is and that is “phenomenal” before Styles and Jericho shake hands.

The moment is then ruined by the arrival of The Social Outcasts as the group mocks the respect between Styles and Jericho before Curtis Axel says that they can see right through Chris Jericho, saying the only reason that Jericho is “playing nice” is because Styles made Jericho tap out. Heath Slater then says that AJ Styles is just going to shake Jericho’s hand after everything “Y2J” said about him before calling Styles a “coward”. Adam Rose then says that no one is “buying” their partnership before Bo Dallas says that Styles & Jericho aren’t a team like they are. Slater then says that Styles & Jericho need to get out of their ring before Jericho says that, if they want Styles & Jericho to be a team, then maybe they’re a team, challenging The Social Outcasts to a match!

The rivals turned tag team would then be in action on RAW as the newly christened “Y2AJ” team of AJ Styles & Chris Jericho would face Social Outcast members Heath Slater & Curtis Axel, with Adam Rose & Bo Dallas in their corner. In the end, it was AJ Styles diving to the outside and taking out Heath Slater, Adam Rose, & Bo Dallas while Chris Jericho locks Curtis Axel in the Walls of Jericho, making Curtis Axel tap out to pick up the win for Y2AJ.

In-Depth Review

Chris Jericho makes his way to the ring to a pop. He talks about AJ Styles and says he didn’t like him when he made his WWE Royal Rumble debut. Jericho says he didn’t understand how you could call yourself phenomenal without having a WWE match. Jericho says then they had three matches and each one was better than before. He says last night’s match at Fastlane was phenomenal. Jericho says he’s had 24 hours to think about the loss and he wants to say some things to AJ’s face. Jericho calls Styles to the ring and out he comes to a pop.

Jericho talks about how he could have stopped Styles’ career by beating him but that didn’t happen, Styles beat him. Jericho gives him props for the match. Jericho congratulates Styles for proving to him and everyone else that he belongs in WWE. Jericho says Styles has what it takes to go to the top and be WWE Champion. Jericho says Styles proved that he’s not good, he’s not great… he’s phenomenal. They shake hands again. The music interrupts and out comes WWE’s Social Outcasts.

Heath Slater, Bo Dallas, Adam Rose and Curtis Axel talk as they walk to the ring, mocking Jericho and Styles. Axel says he can see right through Jericho and he’s only playing nice because AJ made him tap out last night. Slater tries to rile AJ up against Jericho and calls him a coward. The Social Outcasts enter the ring now and tells them to get out. Jericho calls Slater a ginger jackass. Jericho says maybe he and AJ should team up and the fans agree. Jericho says they’re officially a team and are officially going to start with these 4 stooges right here in Detroit. Jericho’s music hits as we go to commercial.

Chris Jericho and AJ Styles vs. Heath Slater and Curtis Axel

Back from the break and Jericho is in control of Slater. Styles comes in and nails a running forearm. Styles goes for the Styles Clash but Slater backdrops him to the apron. Styles counters and kicks Rose off at the floor. He also kicks Bo off. Axel drops Styles while the referee isn’t looking. Slater stomps away on Styles and tags in Axel now. Axel with a nice dropkick on Styles.

Axel and Jericho get tags at the same time and go at it. Jericho unloads on Axel and hits a springboard dropkick on Slater. Jericho with the running bulldog on Axel. Axel dodges a Lionsault. Jericho fights Axel off and goes for the Walls of Jericho. Styles springboards in and takes Slater out with a big right hand as he charges at Jericho. Jericho applies the Walls on Axel. Styles springboards out and takes Slater, Bo and Rose down. Axel taps to Jericho.

Winners: AJ Styles and Chris Jericho

Since arriving on the scene as the #3 entrant in the Royal Rumble Match, independent wrestling legend AJ Styles has made an immediate impact in WWE, scoring a pinfall victory over six-time former World Champion Chris Jericho in his RAW debut. However, the proud veteran would refuse to let the loss go, continuing to keep a close eye on “The Phenomenal One” until their rematch on SmackDown a couple of weeks ago when “Y2J” handed AJ Styles his first loss in WWE. This would lead to Styles forcing Jericho into another rematch and this rubber match between the two accomplished competitors would take place at Fastlane. Can AJ Styles prove himself to Chris Jericho once and for all and show “Y2J” that he is worthy of the moniker “The Phenomenal One”?

After trading victories in recent weeks, the rubber match between two veterans would take place at Fastlane as “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles would go one-on-one with “Y2J” Chris Jericho. During another stellar match between AJ Styles and Chris Jericho, Styles would survive the Walls of Jericho before Jericho takes Styles to the outside, locking in the submission a second time. However, Styles would beat the count back into the ring, narrowly surviving after the Codebreaker and, shortly after this, Styles would score with the Styles Clash, but “Y2J” would kick out! “The Phenomenal One” would then lock in the Calf Crusher and Jericho would fight and claw to try and survive the submission, but Jericho would have no choice but to tap out as AJ Styles picks up a big victory. After the match, AJ Styles would celebrate his win, but would be confronted by Chris Jericho and the two Superstars looked like they would fight again. However, Jericho would lower his fist before extending his hand to Styles in a show of respect as the two veterans shake hands in the middle of the ring after an excellent match.

In-Depth Review
We went backstage where AJ Styles was doing his Twitter Q&A.When asked about how it felt to be here in WWE and what would his legacy be now.  He said he was a star all over the world and beat Chris Jericho on his first night in the company.  That’s how he builds his legacy.Styles was asked about his reaction at the Royal Rumble.  He said that he wanted it but didn’t expect it.  His mind was blown by it.AJ Styles was asked about being inspired to become a wrestler.  He said that he was inspired by Barry Sanders, who was an amazing NFL player but wasn’t the biggest guy.  He said that he’s competing with monsters and tries to be the fastest man.  He said if he was inspired by any wrestler, it would be Sting. He was asked to compare wrestling in WWE to other organizations.  He said he played in the minors and in Japan but this is the major league.

AJ Styles vs. Chris Jericho

They locked up and muscled each other around the ring.  Styles went for a forward roll for a two count.  Jericho ran under a leapfrog and caught Styles with an attempted Walls of Jericho.  Styles escaped and went for the Calf Crusher but Jericho scrambled to the floor.  The crowd went back and forth with dueling chants.

Styles nailed a rana and nailed several rights and a chop in the corner.  He slammed Jericho and nailed a big kneedrop for a two count.  Jericho caught him with a big backdrop and then clotheslined Styles over the top to the floor.  Jericho nailed a sliding kick to the outside, then whipped AJ into the barricade.  Jericho nailed a flying bodypress for a two count and cinched in a side chinlock.

Jericho sent Styles into the corner and leapt into it but AJ moved and Jericho crashed and burnt to the floor.  Styles nailed a slingshot pescado to the floor.  Jericho cut him off in the ring and worked over Styles, who came back with several clotheslines and a leaping one in the corner.  Styles nailed a flying forearm.  He nailed the moonsault into the inverted DDT, although it wasn’t smooth, and scored a two count.

AJ signaled for the Styles Clash but Jericho turned it into a Walls of Jericho attempt.  Styles escaped but was nailed with an enziguiri for a two count.  Jericho went for a bulldog but Styles slammed him facefirst and scored a two count.  Jericho held onto the ropes to avoid a dropkick and nailed a Lionsault for a two count.    Jericho continued working over Styles and placed him on the top turnbuckle but Styles slipped under and pulled Jericho down, nailing his jaw on the buckles.

Styles went for the springboard forearm but Jericho nailed him with a springboard dropkick.  Styles crashed and burned down into the ring.  Jericho went to the top but was nailed with the Pele Kick.  Styles teased the Clash off the top but Jericho sent him back into the ring and locked in the Walls of Jericho.  Styles fought until he made it to the ropes, forcing a break.

Jericho pulled Styles off the apron and flung him towards the barricade, only to come up a little short.  He locked the Liontamer on Styles on the floor.  Styles was close to being counted out but returned to the ring  Jericho snapped him with the Codebreaker as he did, but Styles’ arm landed under the ropes so there was no pinfall.   Jericho began jawjacking Jericho, which led to the crowd chanting for him.  Jericho slapped Styles, who fired back.

Jericho went for a Tiger Driver but Styles turned it into a rana.  He followed through with a Styles Clash but Jericho kicked out at the last second.  Jericho was immediately trapped in the Calf Crusher and finally tapped after trying to gut it out.  Jericho’s facial expressions and teasing of the tap was great.

Your winner, AJ Styles!

Really good match.  This was Styles’ best showing in the company to date and I think it may have been Jericho’s best singles match since returning.  There were a few rough spots from timing but it was during stuff that they were going all out with, so that’s going to happen.

Jericho teased fighting Styles after but instead showed him respect and they shook hands.  This was designed to make Styles something of a workhorse for the company and this match was the one designed to be the kickass wrestling match.
